Beyond our Borders or in Our Backyard: What's News?

    10:15AM - 11:25AM

    (Governor General II)

From Afghanistan to Abitibi, the media "global village" is making more information available, more quickly, about more issues. But the breaking news story is local news. Earlier this year, the CRTC issued a key decision affirming the importance of local news in Quebec. Yet broadcasters, faced with competition from other local media, are taking a hard look at the business case for local news. At this session, news directors and broadcasters debate the business case for local news and discern trends for broadcast news in the future. (Presented in partnership with RTNDA Canada).

Earlier this year, we went through a marathon regulatory hearing on BDUs and discretionary services. The stakes were high: fee-for-carriage, VOD and SVOD, access to BDU carriage, the licensing of future discretionary services. Now, the CRTC has worked its way through thousands of pages of submissions and hundreds of hours of hearings to issue its decision. We'll hear what went into the Commission's deliberations and decision, and learn what this means for private broadcasters.

    Changing Demographics, New Opportunities

    3:30PM - 4:40PM

    (Governor General II)

StatsCan tells us that in the next few years, some 20% of the Canadian population will be part of a visible minority group and 22% will be immigrants - mostly Chinese and South Asian.  Canada's private broadcasters have kept up with the changes, with ethnic broadcasters launching new services and incumbents offering programs that appeal to wide audiences. How do Canada's broadcasters measure up with the rest of the world in appealing to diverse demographics?  Demographers, broadcasters and media analysts discuss the business case for appealing to diverse demographics.

Quebec's private broadcasters compete head-to-head with the national public broadcaster for audiences and advertisers. France has made aggressive moves to distinguish private from public broadcasting, including controversial measures to restrict advertising on the public networks and new funding sources for public broadcasting. What will the "Sarkozy effect" mean for France's private broadcasters? On the radio front, there is talk about re-opening the discussion on the usefulness of the music quotas. This timely conversation with leading French broadcasting experts will explore the stakes for private broadcasting, and draw parallels with Canada’s French language broadcasting market.

Political Experts Weigh in on the Election Results

    9:45AM - 10:45AM

    (Confederation Ballroom)

For the third time in 36 years, a Canadian federal general election will overlap with the US Presidential campaign. Political experts, on both sides of the border, have lots to discuss – predicting the outcome of the US election; commenting on the differences both in terms of the leaders and the campaigns; and debating the respective policy priorities. With the economy as the central issue in both Canada and the US, broadcasters will want to hear from these seasoned veterans. How and what will the new leaders do to improve the domestic economic picture; what are the campaign commitments that will come to the policy forefront; and who will take the policy lead on copyright and media issues?

X, Y and Zoomer: the Broadcasting Generation Gap?

    11:15AM - 12:15PM

    (Governor General II)

A wise thinker once wrote, "every generation laughs at the old fashions, but follows religiously the new." From multi-player online gaming to vcasting, youth are blurring the lines between "real" and "virtual" worlds, between content consumption and content creation. At the same time, "boomers" are becoming "zoomers": a tuned-in, plugged-in, online generation of affluent adults. Hear the views from both ends, as we pit leading youth media experts with expert boomer-marketers. Will they bridge - or broaden - the generational divide?
